This questionnaire is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. A high score indicates a higher risk but does not confirm sleep apnea. Only a sleep study can give a diagnosis.

The three risk levels, according to the authors
0 to 2
Low risk
3 to 4
Intermediate risk
5 to 8
High risk
Risk of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, according to Chung et al. (2016).
The two-step rule
Chung et al. (2016) reclassify an intermediate score (3 or 4) as high risk when at least two of the four STOP questions are positive, together with male sex, a BMI over 35 kg/m² or a neck circumference over 40 cm. The authors note that this rule still needs validating. The questionnaire was published in 2008 by Chung et al. at the University of Toronto.

What next?
Show your result to your GP or your pulmonologist: only they can interpret it and decide whether you need a sleep study. In Belgium, polysomnography is reimbursed by the NIHDI (INAMI/RIZIV) on prescription.
