Screening

Sleep apnea screening tests

These questionnaires are used in clinics to assess the risk of sleep apnea before a confirmation test. They do not replace a medical diagnosis, but they are a valuable first step. Each one produces a PDF report you can send to your doctor.

Important

These questionnaires are screening tools, not a diagnosis. A high score indicates a higher risk but does not confirm sleep apnea. Only a sleep study can give a diagnosis. See your doctor.

Which test should I take?

TestTimeMain focusSensitivity
STOP-BANG 2 min Sleep apnea, screening before surgery 93%
Epworth 3 min Daytime sleepiness Varies
Berlin 5 min Overall assessment 77%

Sensitivity for moderate to severe sleep apnea, according to the authors and the review by Feltner et al. (JAMA, 2022).

A high score? Take the next step

These questionnaires do not replace a medical diagnosis. If your scores point to a moderate or high risk, see your GP or go straight to an accredited sleep center in Belgium.
